Discover the best cycling routes around Lake Balaton, starting from our peaceful Nivegy Valley cottage. Bike rental on-site, local tips included.
If you love cycling, Lake Balaton is one of Europe’s most rewarding destinations. With over 200 kilometres of dedicated cycle paths, flat lakeside roads, vineyard trails, and quiet country lanes, this region has something for every cyclist – from casual family riders to serious touring enthusiasts. Moreover, Rural Cottage Balaton sits in the heart of the Nivegy Valley in the Balaton Uplands – a perfect quiet base from which to explore the entire northern shore of Lake Balaton by bike. Best of all, we offer bike rental on-site, so you can start pedalling the moment you arrive.
The iconic Balaton Cycling Route circles the entire lake – approximately 210 kilometres of well-marked paths and quiet roads. As a result, it is suitable for all levels and is consequently one of Hungary’s most popular cycling experiences.
Of course, you don’t need to do the full loop. In fact, many cyclists use our cottage as a base and explore sections of the route day by day, returning to Balatoncsicsó each evening.

Here are some of our favourite routes, all starting from or easily accessible from our cottages:
1. The Nivegy Valley Loop – 20–35 km | Easy | Beginner-friendly
Explore the charming Nivegy Valley by bike – rolling hills, local wine estates, and quiet country roads with almost no traffic. It is therefore perfect for a leisurely morning ride or a family outing. Additionally, stop at a local winery for a tasting along the way.
2. Tihany Peninsula Loop – 25–30 km | Moderate | Scenic
One of the most beautiful rides in the region. Cycle to the iconic Tihany Peninsula, visit the 1,000-year-old Benedictine Abbey, walk through the lavender fields, and enjoy panoramic views over the lake. The peninsula juts deep into the water and offers spectacular scenery in every direction.
3. Balatonfüred to Badacsony – 40–50 km | Moderate | Wine & Views
Head west along the northern shore to reach the famous Badacsony wine region, where volcanic hillsides produce excellent white wines. Along the way, stop at vineyard restaurants with terraces overlooking the lake. As a result, this route beautifully combines beaches, history, and some of Hungary’s finest wine.
4. Northern Shore Explorer – 50–70 km | Moderate-Challenging | For experienced cyclists
Ride from Balatoncsicsó towards Keszthely, passing through picturesque lakeside towns, thermal bath towns and nature reserves. Furthermore, the northern shore offers more elevation and stunning views over the ‘Hungarian Sea’.
The good news is, you don’t need to bring your own bike. In fact, we offer bike rental directly at the cottage. So you can arrive by train or car and start exploring immediately.
Lake Balaton is well connected to Budapest by train, and Hungarian trains (MÁV) allow bicycles on most regional and intercity routes. You can bring your bike directly from Budapest to the northern shore stations near our cottage.
By train: Budapest Keleti or Déli station → Balatonfüred or Csopak (approx. 1.5–2 hrs)
By car: Balatoncsicsó is approx. 130 km from Budapest (about 1.5 hrs via M7)
Bike transport: Look for trains with a bike symbol – a small fee applies for bike carriage
